We are changing our vaccination protocols to reflect the current studies regarding vaccine duration and booster frequency. Over the past few years, research has shown that some of the vaccines last longer than a year, while others last 8-...12 months. The old practice of giving all boosters every year resulted in keeping some vaccines current, but over vaccinating others. While this has not been shown to be detrimental to health, the dog is getting vaccines they don't need.

To that end, we are adjusting the vaccine schedule to this:
(note: this is a generic vaccine schedule, the one for your dog will be tailored)

Rabies- first one is good for one year, after that they are good for 3 years.

DHPP- after the first booster at 1 year of age, it is good for 3 years (like the rabies vaccine)

Leptospirosis- this vaccine will be given yearly and is now considered a core vaccine. Lepto is a bacterial disease that is spread in puddles, damp leaves, or basically being outside! It causes liver damage and is one of the leading causes of kidney failure in dogs. All dogs should receive this vaccine.

Lyme- Lyme disease is becoming more prevalent in the UP. In 2013 we have already seen more than 40 plus active Lyme cases. Lyme is transmitted by ticks (along with anaplasmosis and erlichiosis, two other tick borne diseases). Hunting dogs and other dogs that spend time outside are at the highest risk, but we have found lyme positive dogs that live in the city. This vaccine is also a yearly vaccine.

Bordetella- also known as Kennel cough. This is still an annual vaccine.

Basically, your dog will still need vaccines (and an exam and fecal test) every year, just not the same vaccines.

We will be adjusting vaccination schedules when you are here for your appointment to bring everyone inline with the current recommendations.
